Whitecaps manager has high praise for Salgado

Making his first career MLS start, No. 1 SuperDraft pick Omar Salgado may have just given head coach Teitur Thordarson more to think about.

Quiet for most of the match, in the blink of an eye Salgado showed why Vancouver’s coaching staff is so high on him, snapping a header into the back of the net to score his first MLS goal in a 2-1 loss toColumbus Crew.

WATCH: Full match highlights

“That {goal} means a lot, especially for him,” Thordarson said. “That’s his first MLS start and he scored a fantastic goal, but he also played very well.”

That was the second time in recent weeks that Salgado has proven his pure striking ability. In Vancouver’s reserve match against Chivas USA two weeks ago, the lanky 17-year-old demonstrated great patience to finish on a breakaway. That killer instinct is precisely the reason why the Whitecaps took him first overall.

The 17-year-old was in line for more playing time with Atiba Harris out with a knee injury, and he showed that he deserved it on Saturday.  Without big striker Eric Hassli, the‘Caps knew that they were going to be in for a tough match against the Crew.

Getty Images

“Coach talked to us before the game and told us that we weren’t going to have much possession in the first half,” Salgado said. “He said we’re going to have to defend and not get scored on and be patient.”

That strategy looked good after 45 minutes of play as the teams went into the break knotted at 0-0. However, things fell apart for Thordarson’s men early in the second half when a pair of mistakes led to a 2-0 lead for Columbus.

“It was frustrating since they hardly had a chance on goal the first 45 minutes.” Thordarson said. “We made two mistakes and that changes the whole thing.”

With the match looking like it could get ugly for Vancouver, Salgado’s ignited the visitors, and for the first time the ‘Caps resembled the attacking team that fans have been accustomed to watching at home. The young prospect was very active in the latter stages of the game and nearly tallied a second goal to level the match shortly after his first, but was denied by Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer.

His energy was a welcome addition to a Whitecaps team that has yet to gain a point away from the friendly confines of Empire Field.

“He did a lot of good things and maybe should have scored more goals,” said Thordarson of Salgado. “I think he did extremely well.”

Hassli will most likely return to a starting role next match, as his ability to hold the ball in the attacking end has been sorely missed in his absence. However, Salgado’s performance may make Thordarson think extra hard about whether to stick with Hassli and Camilo up front or go with the hot hand and give his young No. 1 pick another start.

Ashton: DC don't know how to succeed right now

Heading into Friday night’s match at Houston,D.C. Unitedhad preached discipline and keeping tight at the back.

But the same defensive lapses that have plagued the team in losses this year were evident once again as the club conceded four goals for the second straight league game– and the third time this season – in a 4-1 loss against the Dynamo.

WATCH:FULL MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

“We didn’t compete with them – it’s as simple as that,” DC assistant coach Chad Ashton told MLSsoccer.com over the phone. “We’ve got to figure out exactly what it takes to be a successful team in this league, and right now we don’t understand that.”

Dynamo rookieWill Bruinput Houston up early, getting behind the United defense to slot home past goalieBill Hamidin the 4th minute.

After the early goal, DC fought to settle the game, keeping possession for brief stretches in search of an equalizer. And while they grabbed the tying goal when defenderMarc Burchburied a 25-yard free kick past Dynamo goalieTally Hallin the 39th minute, it was short-lived relief.

Bruin got free just two minutes later to grab his second of the game to put the Dynamo back in the lead. Houston’s danger man,Brad Davis, was the architect this time, getting free down the left flank and firing in a tantalizing cross that Bruin headed past Hamid.

Getty Images

“It’s very worrisome,” Ashton said of the team’s defensive problems, similar to the ones they suffered from earlier this season in a 4-1 defeat at Colorado.

Strong performances were few and far between for DC.Andy Najar, who entered the game off the bench in the second half, threatened shortly after coming on and buoyed a strong 10-minute spell from the visitors. The best chance of that stretch came when Charlie Davies had a free header that went just high and wide of Hall’s net.

The positive stretch of play wouldn’t last long and came to an end when Bruin completed his hat trick in the 57th minute off a Davis free kick. Loose marking was at heart of the goal, allowing the rookie to head home to put the game out of reach.

“It doesn’t feel like right now we understand what it takes to be a winning team in this league,” Ashton said. “I don’t think our approach to the game was very good. I don’t think our mentality was good. We have to be better, plain and simple.”

Not only was it a second straight poor performance, it was a second straight rout suffered on national TV.

“We’ve given eight goals in two games on national television,” Ashton said. “I don’t know what else can motivate you as a player in this league other than getting the entire country to get to see you play and show exactly what you’re all about. And to put up two performances that we putup is not acceptable.”

But United have no time to sulk on the defeat, as they face a quick turnaround when they host theSeattle Sounderson Wednesday evening at RFK Stadium.

“We’re going to go back to work,” Ashton said. “We know the only way we’re going to get better is to work harder at it.”

Revs Notebook: Dabo finally finding his fitness

TORRANCE, Calif.– New England coach Steve Nicol had waited for this moment since Ousmane Dabo signed with the Revolution during the offseason.

The Frenchman finally made hisRevsdebut in Tuesday's 3-2 victory overD.C. Unitedin a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup play-in match after recovering from a right quadriceps strain. Nicol said the 34-year-old midfielder showed why he could make a significant impact in MLS.

“It was pretty much what we thought,” Nicol told MLSsoccer.com after the match. “He's great on the ball. He's calm. But, obviously, he's run out of steam. That's no surprise. When he's fully fit and ready to go, he'll certainly help us.”

Dabo displayed his ability to pick out the right pass and supply his teammates with the correct ball, but the former Lazio and Manchester City man said he will show even more as he sees more time on the field.

“My sharpness was not the best,” Dabo said. “It's been a long time since I've played and I've been injured. I'm sure that I will get back to fitness very quickly and be able to be part of the team if Stevie wants it.”

Nicol certainly wants Dabo to feature in the starting XI at some point, but the exact date of his arrival in the first team remains uncertain. Dabo understandably lacked a bit of fitness during his 76 minutes on the field, but he said he believes he will be able to obtain the required standard with a few more appearances.

“I need maybe one or two more games, and then I will be OK,” Dabo said. “I'm not so slow to get to good fitness. With the training with the team as well, I will be able to get good fitness.”

More time for Dube?

Revolution forwardKheli Dubehas spent plenty of time showing off his versatility during the past year. After scoring twice against United on Tuesday, he hopes that his display will reassert his credentials as a forward.

“It's good to play for the first time,” Dube said. “I haven't played up front in a while. If you're using two forwards, it's easy for me. That's what I like.”

Dube's production against DC provided a timely reminder that he scored eight goals for the Revs in 2009, but he struggled to reproduce that form in 2010. He eventually found himself out of the forward rotation and shunted into a makeshift role on the right side of midfield.

Rajko Lekic,Marko PerovicandZack Schilawski– plus the emergence ofZak BoggsandSainey Nyassias wider options in New England's three-man forward line– have kept Dube down the pecking order for a striking role this season, but he hopes the performance against United will increase his chances to see the field with more regularity.

“You have to score and use every chance you get,” Dube said. “This is a chance to prove yourself. Hopefully, it helps out.”

Hectic week for squad players

Several members of the squad from Tuesday's trip to Boyds, Md., must recover quickly from an extensive week of travel after earning a place in Nicol's squad for Saturday's match atChivas USA(10:30 pm ET,MatchDay Live).

Nicol and those players traveled to Maryland on Monday, returned to Boston on Wednesday and departed for Los Angeles on Thursday.

“That's why we have a big squad,” Dube said. “We have to get help from everybody. Some guys will be going on {to LA}, but it's a team effort to win games. I think we showed that {against United}.”

Despite the rigorous travel itinerary, Nicol said those players pulling double duty will have to find some way to rest their legs and prepare for Saturday.

“They need to be {ready},” Nicol said. “If you win games, you get more games. That's just the way it goes.”

Santos: Win over 2nd-tier Edmonton key for TFC

The result may have been what was expected, but Wednesday’s 3-0 win over second-tier FC Edmonton was no less important forToronto FC, according to strikerMaicon Santos.

The Brazilian scored a brace in the win, which gave the Reds a commanding lead in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship semifinal over the expansion NASL side. Following the game, Santos was already looking ahead to how the win might set upTFCthis weekend against theSeattle Sounders.

“For sure, it’s important,” he told MLSsoccer.com by telephone from Edmonton. “The win gives us confidence and helps us as we look to get a win in Seattle.”

WATCH:FULL MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Additionally, Santos said his goals were big on a personal level.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I needed to score some goals and tonight was good – we played well.”

Playing against a team you are expected to beat can be thankless. If you do win, you may not get the credit you deserve and if you lose, fan’s reaction can often be harsher than what it might be against a more equal opponent. Santos says that made Wednesday’s match against Edmonton a tricky one for the Reds.

“You need to make sure you are intense, ready to play,” he said. “You don’t know what to expect so you have to play as hard against {lower teams} as you do always.”

Santos gives credit to head coach Aron Winter for his preparation heading into the game. He also says the coach has done a good job rotating the squad to keep legs fresh. He expects more changes next week as the Reds look to wrap the series up and advance to the NCC final.

According to Santos, getting the young players a run out in games like that can only make Toronto better.

“It’s good to let them see what it takes to play,” he said.

That’s the way fantasy soccer works sometimes, it goes in spurts and can be unpredictable. But you also have to play the percentages to get the most points. So this week we will take a look at the top 3 and bottom 3 for goals scored and goals allowed by team for this season.

Getty Images

Top 3 teams

Goals scored– Sporting KC,LA Galaxyand Vancouver (10)

Goals allowed-Real Salt Lake(1); New York and Philadelphia (2)

Bottom 3 teams

Goals scored– Philadelphia (4); Columbus andChivas USA(5)

Goals allowed– Portland (13); Vancouver,D.C. United, Chicago and Sporting KC (12)

Here are the MLS links for injuries and discipline, usually updated Tuesdays and Fridays:

Discipline Report

You can also get updates on these and MLS Projected Starting Lineups from us at MLS Fantasy Gurus on Facebook and Twitter every week.

Tip(s) of the week: No team plays twice this week, but look to load up on D.C. United, Colorado, Houston and Seattle players as they will play twice the following week.

TOP XI for points:

Getty Images

GK– Faryd Mondragón (PHI)– The Colombian international plays at home this week against theSan Jose Earthquakes, who have only scored six goals all season long. Look for shutout and win points here.

D–Jimmy Conrad(CHV)– Back playing in his native Southern California this season, Conrad has been battling some post concussion problems, but seems to be over them now. Look for him to get one of his signature header goals in this game played at the Home Depot Center vs. New England.

D–Chad Marshall(CLB)– The 2009 MLS Defender of the Year plays in Crew Stadium this week against a Vancouver team that has allowed two central defenders to score against them this year.

D–Drew Moor(COL)– The veteran plays at Dick's Sporting Goods Park against aChicago Fireteam that has also allowed two goals to central defenders this season.

Getty Images

M–Brad Davis(HOU)– The 2010 MLS All-Star is having a good start to the season so far with four assists. With a home game this week against DC, a team that has allowed two left mids to score already this season, look for Davis to add to his assist total and pick up his first goal.

M–Jamie Smith(COL)– The former Celtic FC and Aberdeen FC player has a home game this week and should add to his two goals and one assist that he has on the season.

M -Dane Richards(NY)-The 27-year-old Jamaican international plays a home game against Sporting KC this week. Look for him to add to his season tally (1 goal, 2 assists) against a weakened Sporting defense.

M–Eddie Gaven(CLB)– The 12th overall pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft plays at home this week against aVancouver Whitecapsteam that has allowed 12 goals this season, tied for second-most allowed in MLS.

F– Thierry Henry (NY)– The former Arsenal and FC Barcelona striker has finally come alive, with three goals in his last two games. Playing at home in Red Bull Arena against a Sporting KC team that has concentrated on offense and pretty much forgotten their defense should allow him to keep his streak alive.

F–Will Bruin(HOU)– The 11th overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft has been looking really sharp lately and should be able to pick up a goal against D.C. United this week at Robertson Stadium.

F - Carlos Ruiz (PHI) -The 2002 MLS MVP has two goals this season and should be able to tack on another with a home game against a San Jose team that has allowed a majority of goals to poachers like Ruiz this season .

Here are our official teams for Week 7 in the basic game:

FantasyGuruDave’s choices:

GK-Hall (HOU), D-Franklin (LA), UTL- Rodgers (NY), M-Smith (COL), M-Davis (HOU), F-Bruin (HOU), F-Cháves (CHI).

Feud between Trillium Cup foes growing stronger

TORONTO– Does a trophy make a rivalry? That’s the question manyToronto FCand Columbus fans have asked themselves about the Trillium Cup contest, which resumes on Saturday at BMO Field (4 pm ET,MatchDay Live).

Many supporters have always found the idea of a rilvary between the capitals of Ohio and Ontario as an awkward fit. There is next to no sporting history between the two cities in any sport and they have only been competing in soccer since 2007.

Yet, both clubs continue to sell this game as a genuine derby, regardless of the lack of history.

According to Red Patch Boys president Boris Aguilar, early fan resistance to what was once perceived as a manufactured rivalry is fading quickly– manyTFCfans now look forward to the game against Columbus as much as any other.

Getty Images

“It became about the fans,” he said. “There were a few interactions between the fans that caused a mutual dislike. From that, a rilvary that may have been contrived evolved.”

For Toronto’s sake, it’s a good thing the rilvary was focused on the fans, because Toronto FC have never defeated the Crew in 11 matches all-time between the Eastern Conference rivals. The Reds faithful even had to watch as Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer scored a stoppage-time equalizer against TFC last October.

The one-sided results might make some conclude that it’s only Toronto that cares about this game. Although many Crew fans will try to argue just that, supporters group leaders admit they might get an extra kick out of beating their Canadian foes.

“{It can be} mean-spirited at times, but has developed into humorous jabs back and forth for the most part,” Crew Union president John Clem said.

Clem thinks the fixture, and hype that surrounds it, helps to sell the game.

“Whether an on-the-field rivalry or not, it's good for MLS,” Clem explained. “It adds extra meaning to the games between the clubs.”

One of the biggest factors in the growth of the rivalry were two large trips by TFC supporters in 2008 and '09. MLSsoccer.com’s Canada reporter Rudi Schuller helped organize the trips and says that what transpired on those weekends helped solidify the feud.

“We went down and took over their stadium and basically made it a big TFC party,” Schuller said. “They didn’t like that and it motivated them to step up and do something about it.

It wasn’t just Crew supporters that left the games feeling uncomfortable, however.

“We didn’t like watching our team get pushed around on the pitch either,” Schuller said. “It just made us want to get them more.”

The Trillium Cup may have started as a marketing exercise, but fans on both sides agree it has evolved into something much more than that. And if the TFC faithful finally get the better of Columbus on Saturday, you can bet they will celebrate just a little bit harder.

Finally healthy, Henry shows what he can do

It took the better part of nine months, but finally, in New York’s 4-0 rout ofD.C. Unitedon Thursday night, theThierry Henrythat Red Bulls fans had been waiting to see finally exploded onto the scene.

WATCH:FULL MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

The French star’s double and assist in New York’s thorough win at RFK Stadium was the embodiment of what New York expected when they signed Henry in July 2010, not the player hampered by injuries who only managed two goals in his first year in MLS.

New York head coach Hans Backe had called Henry’s performance in a 3-0 win over San Jose last week the striker’s best so far as a Red Bull. His display against DC easily tops that, and having a hand in three of his team’s goals only helps build on a confidence that never wavered, even as Henry struggled to find the back of the net earlierin the season.

“I think as long as he’s playing and feeling fit, he will always be fine,” assistant coach Jan Halvor Halvorsen told MLSsoccer.com. “He never lost his confidence in himself.”

Last year, fans and the media anticipated that Henry would steamroll through MLS. Joining an already solid New York club, Henry immediately started to whet the appetite of everyone watching when he scored in his debut in a friendly against EPL side Tottenham.

Henry, though, would go on to struggle with fitness and injuries and never found his form in 2010. Even this year, he has battled hamstring issues and a chronic Achilles injury early on.

But over the past two games, the prolific striker has found his magic touch because, it seems, he’s finally injury-free.

Getty Images

“He can run 100 percent now,” Halvorsen said. “He’s moving. He went for the runs we know he can make, he wants to make.”

In his first goal against DC, for example, Henry made a darting 30-yard run to come up unmarked near the penalty spot to head home a Jan Gunnar Solli cross in the 12th minute.

WATCH:Henry drives a header into the goal

Then, in the 38th, Henry hovered around the top of the box until he found the opportunity to streak in and hammer home a Solli ball that begged for a finish.

To cap his performance, the forward calmly controlled a deep ball from defender Rafa Márquez inside the center line and then flicked a pass toJoel Lindpere, who would go on to add New York’s third goal in the 76th.

Now that he’s healthy, the Red Bulls are enjoying the full value that is Henry.

“I think it’s a lot with the health issue definitely {making him play better} because if you have some pain, you can’t be as explosive as you want to and you can’t run the way you want to,” Backe told reporters after the match.

Given the fact that in a six-day span, Henry went from being scoreless on the season to being tied for second in the league in goals is great news for New York: The real Henry, the one every one expected, has arrived.

Canadian U-17s lose 2-1 to host Mexico

Canada’s U-17 national team fell 2-1 Wednesday to host Mexico in the first of two friendlies to be played between the teams this week.

A pair of goals by Marco Antonio Bueno -- one in each half -- were enough for the Mexicans to prevail, although the young Canuck side kept things interesting thanks to a second-half strike by Sadi Jalali.

Bueno opened the scoring in the 17th minute, giving Mexico a lead that they’d hold on to for the rest of the opening half. In fact, it wasn’t until the 72nd minute of play that Jalali put the Canadians on the scoresheet to bring the teams on level terms.

Jalali had entered the match just 12 minutes prior, and looked to be the difference-maker for the Canadians. The even scoreline would last only 10 minutes, however, as Bueno struck for his second goal of the match in the 82nd minute.

Both teams are preparing for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, which kicks off in June. Canada qualified for the tournament for the first time in 16 years at the CONCACAF championships in February, while Mexico was assured of a spot by virtue of being the host nation.

The teams will meet again Sunday at Morelia’s Estadio Morelos.

Weary Monterrey ready to gut out win vs. RSL

MONTERREY, Mexico– Defending Mexican league champions Monterrey are going to be literally running for their lives on Wednesday night in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final against MLS sideReal Salt Lake(10 pm ET, Fox Soccer and TeleFutura).

The two Monterrey players made available to speak to the press on Tuesday afternoon indicated in separate Q&A sessions that the key to getting a lead againstRSLin the Estadio Tecnológico was to run, run and run some more. But will they have the legs to do it against a fresher opponent?

“It’s essential {Wednesday} that we not lose our attitude,” midfielder Osvaldo Martínez said. “We can’t stop running. We haven’t done enough to get the result in the last few games, and this will be a great opportunity to forget all that has happened and get after it to gain an important lead {in this series} ahead of the next game {in Utah}.”

WATCH:CCL Final 1st Leg: Monterrey vs. Real Salt Lake

Rayados forward Sergio Santana (pictured above, right) offered a similar response when asked about the path to victory.

“A lot of movement,” Santana said. “And we need patience because it’s not going to be easy. {RSL} are a very organized team. We have to open up their defense. It’s going to be very difficult, but with a lot of movement, we can do it. And we have to be a little daring, too.”

Both players admitted to the fact that Monterrey have not played well as of late during the recent five-match stretch in which they have failed to register a single win across all competitions. The fact thatlos Rayadosbeen busy on two competitive fronts with very little rest in between matches has weighed heavily on the team. They have yet to qualify to the Mexican league playoffs with two matches to go.

“There have been a lot of lineup changes by the coach and that’s part of it,” Santana said in reference to manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s attempt to keep his squad fresh. “Others say that it’s fatigue, but we can’t look for excuses.”

Simon Borg/MLSsoccer.com

Given the rough patch they’re going through, the Monterrey players say they are prepared to just gut out a victory if they have to.

“The image that we’ve given off in the last games is not what we wanted,” said Martínez (pictured right). “But this is a final and we have to win it in any way possible. It doesn’t matter if we play well or ugly, we have to win.”

Santana and Martínez did not give any indication that they knew much about RSL except to merely point out the threat that Jason Kreis’ men pose on set pieces. But if Monterrey didn’t already know, they were reminded on multiple occasions by journalists about RSL’s 37-match unbeaten streak at Rio Tinto Stadium. They danced around all talk about the second leg.

Monterrey are clearly hanging their hat on a sold-out crowd– the word was 18,000 tickets of 28,000 available had been sold as of Tuesday morning – and the fact that they have experience playing in finals – they won two of the last three Mexican titles – play to their favor.

“We’re used to playing these types of elimination games,” Santana said. “We have a lot of desire to face another final and get to go to the Club World Cup championship.”

Despite short week, Henry looks OK to start at DC

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J.– It was jovial, upbeat stuff from the Red Bulls while training at Montclair State University on Monday, a confident bunch coming off Saturday’s 3-0 home win over San Jose. The good news continued for New York on Monday as forwardThierry Henrywas out training with the Red Bulls reserves with no sign of being limited by a chronic Achilles injury.

“The reaction from the Saturday game seems to be OK,” head coach Hans Backe said. “Seeing him on the pitch {today} means he’s OK.”

Ten days ago, Henry suffered an Achilles injury that shelved him for much of last week during training. But the striker recovered to put in his best performance for the Red Bulls this past weekend, scoring and assisting in Saturday night’s rout of the Earthquakes.

WATCH:Henry scores first of 2011 season in San Jose rout

Last week, Backe said he’d consider resting Henry if the Achilles continued to bother his star striker as the Red Bulls entered a shortened week. But Backe's fears seem to have been allayed as New York prepare for Thursday's nationally televised match atD.C. United.

“Absolutely, he felt fresh,” Backe said, adding that he plans to start Henry at RFK Stadium. “No problem with the Achilles.”

Lindpere’s knee:It was a rarity to seeJoel Lindperesubbed out of Saturday’s match as the Estonian winger is somewhat of an iron man for the Red Bulls. Lindpere, however, limped straight off the field and went immediately to the locker room before the final whistle against the Earthquakes.

The 29-year-old had his knee drained last week after suffering an injury during preseason training and thinks an infection may have developed after the draining. Lindpere had a MRI on Monday morning and will learn the results on Wednesday. Like Henry, Backe anticipates Lindpere being ready to play.

“I think we can manage {him in} the game on Thursday,” Backe said.

This is what we want:Saturday night was clinical stuff from New York, who held possession well and scored three times in executing their attractive style of play. Former FC Barcelona midfielder and Mexican national-team captain liked the aesthetically pleasing style of his team.

“That’s exactly how we want to play,” Márquez said Monday, but warned of overconfidence. “It’s always a hard to maintain the same level week after week. And that’s what we’ll be trying to do in DC.”

Not quite Sutton time:Backe confirmed that goalkeeperGreg Suttonis back with the team and training but is not quite ready to play. The Canadian international started the season-opening win over Seattle but suffered a concussion the next week in training and has been sidelined since.

“He should be 100 percent OK,” Backe said. “Perhaps he needs more training sessions before playing.”

Sutton trained with the goalkeepers on Monday during a session with coach Todd Hoffard that was high-paced and focused intensely on footwork. He looked sharp in the finishing drills at the end of the session.

Dynamo relieved to punctuate night with win

HOUSTON– No matter how much effort a team puts into scoring goals, sometimes it’s better for the ball to just bounce their way. For theHouston Dynamoon Sunday, that was definitely the case.

On a night where the Dynamo pulled out an exciting 1-0 win in the 86th minute, it wasn’t one of the 25 clear shots that that got them the win; it was a tap-in off a hustle play from right backHunter Freemanoff a corner kick that casually rolled over the goal line.

“Whoever’s in there is suppose to be a distraction so the ‘keeper can’t come out and catch the ball easy,” said head coach Dominic Kinnear of Freeman’s work on the game winner.

“{Hunter} took a little bit of a hit in the first half, so for him to keep on in there and be a menace is a testament to him,” continued Kinnear. “I don’t think he knew too much about the goal, but I think it’s one of those when you go in there and you make sure the goalkeeper doesn’t have an easy route to catch the ball.”

Without that tap in, the Dynamo would have left their home field frustrated and upset after a night of chances going just wide or high. But thanks to Freeman carving out space and being in the right place at the right time, the Dynamo head to Chicago next Saturday with momentum on their side.

“It wasn’t a pretty goal, but it was nothing short of what we deserved,” said Kinnear. “We created a lot of chances and, by virtue of watching the replay, I thought we should have had a goal in the run of play. Overall, it was a good attacking night, the goal kind of relieves the frustrationand the guys walk off the field happy.”

Kinnear’s sentiments were confirmed in the Dynamo locker room. After peppering New England goalkeeperMatt Reis–who made six saves – for 85 minutes, Freeman’s goal was justice on a night where they dominated the run of play.

“It was one of those games where we created chances but couldn’t get one to go our way,” said rookie forwardWill Bruin, who led the team with nine shots, three of those on goal.“We kept sticking with it and found a way to get {a goal}. A win’s a win and we gutted it out and got the three points.”

WATCH:Freeman taps in the winner

After starting the season slow in the attack, the Dynamo are starting to generate chances– 45 shots in the last two weeks – and dominate possession. After a dominant offensive performance and getting the ball to bounce their way for the late winner, Kinnear’s team will look to keep momentum going.

“Now we just have to stay positive and take the good from tonight and bring it into next week against Chicago,” midfielderGeoff Cameronsaid.“We have to use the momentum we have from our play this weekend and use it against Chicago.”

Red Bulls not looking for revenge vs. Earthquakes

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J.– For New York Red Bull fans, “revenge” will be the theme of this Saturday’s game against San Jose (7:30 pm ET, Direct Kick,MatchDay Live). The Earthquakes, after all, were the club who prematurely dumped the Red Bulls from the MLS Cup Playoffs last autumn.

New York’s players and coaches, however, won’t talk about revenge this Saturday at Red Bull Arena. Instead, they’re just focusing on a win.

“They caused us some pain last year, kicking us out of the playoffs,” forwardThierry Henrysaid.“I don’t know if it’s a revenge game.”

It shouldn’t be. Last year’s playoff loss notwithstanding, the Red Bulls have bigger things to focus on, namely scoring and winning. The club is bottom of the table in goals scored, finding the back of the net just twice this year through four games. Henry has yet to score and despite holding possession for 64.5 percent in each of the last two games, New York have just one goal to show for all their time on the ball.

That, coupled with a tough Earthquakes side, makes for more than just revenge on Saturday night. The team is gearing up for a battle against San Jose.

“I think they’re better than last year, they’re very well-organized,” head coach Hans Backe said. “A very good possession side, they play good football.”

Which means the Red Bulls will need to play better in the final third than they’ve shown so far. Just one victory in four games to start the season is a rougher than expected start for a lineup which is, on paper, one of the deepest and best in the league. There is little argument that it has been underachieving stuff from the Red Bulls so far this season.

“Where we are at right now, we need to win,” Henry said. “I think right now, it doesn’t matter who we play, we need to win.”

The one bright spot from last year’s playoff series against San Jose was the emergence of forwardJuan Agudelo. It was the teenage striker who assisted on New York’s lone goal in the second leg loss at Red Bull Arena, tallying his first point in MLS. While Agudelo says that the game on Saturday is as important as any other in the regular season, he does want to beat San Jose badly.

“We always wanted to go against them again,” Agudelo said. “Show them that, yeah, maybe last year they beat us, but we’re a different team this year.”

KC Notebook: Sporting look to add more players

KANSAS CITY, Mo.– Barring any setbacks, it seems certain Sporting Kansas City will sign at least one player before the end of the transfer deadline on Friday.

Manager Peter Vermes played coy during his weekly press conference on Thursday, acknowledging that he was working diligently on adding the final pieces to the puzzle but also resisting the urge to say names before all the details were finalized.

“We are really trying,” Vermes said. “Believe me, I would to love to announce a couple things right now. We’re really close.”

Two players that certainly fall under that banner are Omar Colley, a teenage defender from Gambia who has been training with the team since preseason, and Aurélien Collin, a French defender who has been with the team for the last three weeks as he waits for a contractual issue with his Portuguese club to be resolved.

Reports out of Gambia this week indicated that Colley’s club was seeking compensation from Kansas City while Collin (pictured, right) was still waiting for a mediator’s ruling that could release him from his current contract with Vitória Setubal.

“Those are two guys that we are really trying hard to get done before the end of this transfer window,” Vermes said. “The issue is that we are still dealing with paperwork from those countries. It’s coming down to the wire.”

Another name that has surfaced recently in Spanish-language reports is 20-year-old Colombian striker Cristian Nazarith.

Nazarith has played for Independiente Santa Fe in his home country for the past two seasons after starting his career with América de Cali. He has also played for Colombia’s U-17 and U-20 national teams, scoring scoring three goals at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

When asked whether Kansas City had any interest in signing the player, Vermes admitted that he knew who Nazarith was but dodged making any definitive statement regarding the club’s interest.

“I know who he is,” Vermes said. “He’s a good player.”

Bravo has surgery in Los Angeles

Designated PlayerOmar Bravohad surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles to correct a sports hernia injury.

Vermes said the issue began prior to the season’s opening game againstChivas USAbut did not become serious until it flared up again during the first half of last week’s US Open Cup qualifier against Houston.

Bravo was removed at halftime of that game, and Vermes said the team’s doctors recommended the issue be corrected before it became more serious. Bravo is expected to be out four to six weeks.

“{The doctors} said it was the right thing to do to get it done now because where it is right now is not that bad,” Vermes said. “The time frame on recovery is going to be much shorter than if we had waited.”

Draw shows Galaxy still have long way to go

TheLA Galaxy’s trip to Canada yielded no goals and just one point, but players walked away feeling as if more was within reach.

Playing without team captainLandon Donovanfor the second consecutive match, the Galaxy tiedToronto FC0-0 in what was a frustrating and ultimately costly match.David Beckhampicked up his fifth yellow card of the season while Juninho earned a late red card and both will be out on Saturday.

WATCH:FULL MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Still, players said they deserved more.

“We had the chances, we just couldn’t put them away,” Beckham said. “When you have that many chances, sometimes you need a bit of luck on your side and we just didn’t have it.”

Luck did not seem to be on the Galaxy’s side. Beckham rattled a late free kick off the post whileChad Barretthit the crossbar early. Shots were falling, but not the way the club had hoped for.

Getty Images

“We hit the post, we hit the crossbar a couple of times and we had the majority of the play and the majority of the chances,” Beckham said. “But it’s disappointing. Obviously we want to win these games.”

Barrett earned the start at forward after Miguel Lopez started the last two matches. A former Toronto FC player, Barrett performed well in familiar surroundings.

“Chad did well, he worked hard,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “He maybe had a chance to get a goal but I thought he had his best game of the year for us.”

For Barrett, the trip to BMO Field brought back memories and was the source of an exciting night, even if three points were not in order.

“There is a bunch of excitement, obviously I was ready to go,” he said. “I thought the team did very well today. We came out, we forced them out, and we pressed the game. We got a little open there at the end, but we have to try to push forward and score a goal. I think that we were the betterteam and I think we deserved more than what we got here.”

Worse than the negative feelings surrounding the draw, players and coaches felt what they left on the table is the tangible negatives heading into Sunday’s match at Chicago.

Donovan is questionable as a knee injury has kept him in Southern California while the team is away. Beckham and Juninho will also sit the match on suspension, meaning the club’s top assist-man (Beckham has three assists) and goal-scorer (Juninho leads the team with two goals) are gone.

WATCH:Juninho gets sent off

Beckham’s yellow card was his fifth in six games. He becomes the first player in MLS this season to miss a game due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

The team’s offensive woes continued and are becoming more pronounced. The Galaxy have five goals in six games and saw their average goals per game dip to under one following the shutout. Three of the goals have come on set pieces as the Galaxy struggle to generate scoring opportunities in the run of play.

“We have got a long way to go,” Arena said. “Certainly, when you walk off the field and you don’t have three points, you know you have a lot of work ahead of you and we do.”

Kennedy grabs ahold of No. 1 shirt for Chivas USA

CARSON, CALIF–Chivas USAgoalkeeperDan Kennedyworked tirelessly to recover from injuries so that he could reclaim his starting spot. Now that he’s got it, he’s shown no signs of letting go.

Kennedy has backstopped the Goats to their first two results of the season after taking over forZach Thorntonin goal. Kennedy made his first start of the year in a 1-0 US Open Cup qualifying loss to thePortland Timbersand has not ceded the position. In the last two league matches, he’s let up just one goal and Chivas have come away with a pair of draws.

Getty Images

Kennedy’s renaissance comes after the 28-year-old goalkeeper missed the start of preseason recovering from a torn biceps tendon that he suffered in August of 2010. After two positive results in two starts, head coach Robin Fraser is pleased with what he’s seen so far from the goalkeeper.

“We didn’t see Dan much for the preseason, so we got a lot of looks at Zach. I wanted to get a chance to see Dan in the Open Cup game,” said Fraser following Saturday’s match. “So since then, he’s had a run of games because he’s been pretty good, so would I say that he’s number one?At the moment yes, because he’s the one that’s starting, but I think there is a healthy competition between goalkeepers right now.”

In the scoreless draw with theColumbus Crewon the weekend, Kennedy did well to leave a lasting impression. Throughout the match, he appeared his usual mobile self, routinely coming off his line to negate Crew opportunities from corner kicks. Kennedy made two saves on the night, including a fingertip save on anEddie Gavenbreak away that preserved the Rojiblancos’ first shut-out of 2011.

Kennedy is determined to do his best to earn a regular spot in the starting lineup.

“I want to be in the team every week, that’s why I’m playing and why I am pursuing this career,” said Kennedy. “I want to be on the field and contribute, so I’m going to do my best week in and week out to be in a position to put myself on the field every week.”
