Chilean national team coach Marcelo Bielsa has announced a roster primarily made up reserve players for the team’s Jan. 22 international friendly against the United States in Los Angeles.
Absent are the high-profile names that led Chile into the Round of 16 during last summer’s World Cup in South Africa, and instead the 16-man roster consists entirely of players who play professionally in Chile.
Although 11 of the players on the roster have at some point appeared for the Chilean national team before, forward Esteban Paredes is easily the most experienced. The 30-year-old Colo Colo striker came on as a substitute during Chile’s 1-0 win over Switzerland and the 2-1 loss to Spain in the group stage in South Africa, and has 19 caps to his credit since 2006.
Coach Bob Bradley released the names last month for the US camp at the Home Depot Center, Calif., and the group was similarly young and inexperienced. The list includes 20 players from Major League Soccer, and no one invited to the camp has appeared in a World Cup for the Americans.
The US camp opens Tuesday.
The Chilean national team roster:
Goalkeepers:Paulo Garcés (Universidad Católica) y Raúl Olivares (Colo Colo)
Defenders:Eugenio Mena (Universidad de Chile), Sebastián Toro (Colo Colo), Paulo Magalhaes (Colo Colo), José Pedro Fuenzalida (Colo Colo), Carlos Labrín (Huachipato) y Fernando Meneses (Universidad Católica)
Midfielders:Felipe Seymour (Universidad de Chile), Francisco Silva (Universidad Católica), Luis Pedro Figueroa (Unión Española), Felipe Gutiérrez (Universidad Católica) y Lucas Domínguez (Audax Italiano)
Forwards:Edson Puch (Universidad de Chile), Esteban Paredes (Colo Colo) y Daud Gazale (Colo Colo).
